With a time of 2 hours 9 minutes 57 seconds, the Kenyan beat Ethiopian Tigst Assefa’s world record by over two minutes.
However, the information beneath the title was equally astounding.
The fifth-fastest women’s half-marathon time in history would have been achieved by Chepngetich, who crossed the halfway line in 1:04:16.
She finished the second half of the race in 1:05:41, which would have placed her 36th overall.
Her marathon time of 15 minutes and 24 seconds was the equivalent to more than eight and a half Parkruns.
In the Chicago men’s race, only ten racers were able to better 30-year-old Chepngetich’s time.
In fact, her performance was judged equal to a men’s marathon time of 1:59:37 on World Athletics scoring tables, which are used to compare results across genders and disciplines.
