The only secure facility in the United Kingdom with the capacity to produce gallium arsenide semiconductors, which are essential components of military aircraft like Typhoon fighter fighters, is the factory located in Newton Aycliffe, close to Darlington.
The Telegraph reported in August that Apple had withdrawn as a supplier to the facility, which was owned by US semiconductor giant Coherent, Inc.; among its clients was the Italian aerospace company Leonardo. As a result, the facility was in danger of closing.
The report stated that Coherent was not believed to have any pending orders with Leonardo.
According to the MoD, “up to 100” skilled employment in the area will be protected by the government’s acquisition.
