A National Audit Office (NAO) assessment characterized as “optimistic” customer demand assumptions for heat pumps, which are electrically powered devices that extract heat from the earth, air, or water to heat buildings.
About eighteen percent of the nation’s total greenhouse gas emissions are attributable to the residential energy sector.
According to the NAO, less than half of the up to 50,000 clean heating units anticipated at that time were installed under the grant program, with just 18,900 installed between May 2022 and December 2023.
It further stated that the quantity of heat pumps being installed has grown after the grant was raised from £5,000 to £7,500 in September, but the study also raised concerns about whether the increase would be maintained.
