The federal government has ruled out any abuse of the law while guaranteeing due process and discussion on changing the controversial legislation, despite concerns from many segments of society about the planned changes to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 (Peca).
Prime Minister’s Coordinator Rana Ihsaan Afzal stated on Thursday’s “Pakistan” show on News that “[this law] will not be misused [and if it is], multiple forums will be available where [the misuse] can be identified and the law can be further amended as well [if needed].”.
The official’s comments follow the federal government’s submission of revisions to the Peca that would have reduced the jail sentence for “intentionally disseminating false and fake information” from seven years to three years.
