Ministers are starting talks with multinational energy companies about building the UK’s third mega-nuclear power station on Anglesey, according to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ).
The agency stated that the gigawatt nuclear power plant could deliver clean power to six million homes for 60 years.
By 2050, Britain hopes to generate a quarter of its electricity from home-grown nuclear power, or approximately 24GW.
The goal is part of the government’s ambition to improve energy security and achieve net zero.
Currently, nuclear power accounts for approximately 15% of the UK’s electrical demands.
