The nation’s utility stores may close as part of a federal government effort to save costs, the Secretary of Industry and Production revealed on Friday.
Is the administration going to close utility retailers across the nation? Senator Saifullah Niazi asked during today’s Senate Standing Committee meeting.
The development was verified by Secretary Saif Anjum, who also stated that efforts were in progress to move the utility shop staff to other departments.
According to the official, “the government wants to get out of unnecessary businesses,” and subsidizing utility stores would hurt market competitiveness.
Utility store management claims that they have been given a two-week deadline by the government to resolve disputes with companies while the Rs. 50 billion subsidy, which earlier offered significant relief to around 26 million deserving households, has been halted.
