ISLAMABAD: In an effort to address the issue of independent power producers (IPPs), the administration of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has chosen to apply the same take-and-pay model to both state-run and privately owned IPPs, according to a report published in The News on Wednesday.
“We have made the decision to remove the government from the electric power industry. The government-owned power plants that produce 52% of the electricity would likewise switch to a take-and-pay system. According to one of the top officials on the task group on electricity sector reforms who is also actively involved in the negotiations with the IPPs, “the government would finance them only to make them operational.”
