Karen Poth decided last year that her museum in Mobile, Alabama needed a new name to properly reflect its special status.
Prior to gathering funds for the project, she had to secure the backing of her board of directors and political leaders. She then had to update the museum’s printed materials, logo, and website. The National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico, the only museum in the world devoted to the history, mythology, and culture of the biggest gulf on Earth, was ultimately revealed by her in April 2024, when she wrote the new name in letters that stretched 50 feet across the eight-story structure.
When US President Donald Trump recently declared his intention to rename the body of water, you could understand her reaction.
