Yvette Cooper will be joined at the National Crime Agency’s London headquarters by Attorney General Lord Hermer, Foreign Secretary David Lammy, Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood, and officials from the NCA, Border Force, and Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
“Smashing the gangs” was one of Sir Keir Starmer’s main promises to address small boat crossings in the Channel, following his party’s vow to abandon the Conservatives’ Rwanda plan to deport those entering the UK illegally to the African country.
In an attempt to combat illegal migration, Labour declared shortly after gaining power that it would redirect tens of millions of pounds from the Rwanda plan to establish a new Border Security Command (BSC).
In an effort to halt small boat crossings, the party is also pushing through the previous government’s proposal to reopen two immigration centers.
Following the deaths of at least 12 individuals in the Channel this week, including ten women and girls, there will be a conference on Friday.
