Experiments that could eventually result in a new generation of radiation equipment are being conducted in a number of enormous underground tunnels on the outskirts of Geneva, Switzerland. It is hoped that these gadgets may help treat complicated brain tumors, eradicate cancers that have spread to other organs, and lessen the overall negative effects of cancer treatment on the body.
The European Laboratory for Particle Physics (Cern), which is best known worldwide as the particle physics center that created the Large Hadron Collider—a 27-kilometer (16.7-mile) ring of superconducting magnets that can accelerate particles to almost the speed of light—is the location of these experiments.
