Russia’s military sites in Syria will be discussed with the country’s new rulers in Damascus, the Kremlin said Monday, adding that it was too soon to predict what the future might bring.
Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia following the swift advance of a militia alliance led by a former al-Qaeda offshoot, Hayat al-Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). This raised concerns about two strategically significant Russian military installations in Syria.
When asked about the bases’ future, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov responded, “It’s premature to talk about it yet.”
“This is all a subject for discussion with those who will be in power in Syria,” Peskov stated, referring to the “extreme instability” that existed in Ukraine.
