Mrs. Trump stated that she supports women’s “individual freedom” and called it a “basic right that all women possess from birth” in a brief video clip promoting her next book.
It occurs one day after a newspaper article revealed an extended passage from her soon-to-be published memoir, in which she is purportedly even more pro-choice.
Mrs. Trump seems to be taking a different stand on the matter than her husband, who has claimed responsibility for trying to overturn Roe v Wade and hence the constitutional right to an abortion.
However, it continues a longstanding American custom of Republican first ladies who have advocated for the protection of access to legal abortions ever since Roe v. Wade was ruled in 1973.
In 1975, First Lady Betty Ford described the Roe decision as a “great, great decision” while she was still in the White House.
Nancy Reagan held off on publicly stating that she “believed in a woman’s choice” until her husband, President Ronald Reagan, had left office, but it is stated that the White House was aware of her views on the matter.
