In her first few days in the new parliament, Jennie the golden retriever—who is actually a quarter Labrador—has gained a lot of attention.
Last week, Jennie made her Commons debut as Steve Darling’s guide dog, the newly elected Liberal Democrat MP who is registered blind.
When MPs met in the chamber for the first time to elect the Speaker, she was observed calmly lying down at the front benches.
Additionally, during his swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday as the Torbay MP, Mr. Darling, the former leader of Torbay council, was heard reassuring her to “stay there, good girl.”
“Colleagues are already describing Jennie as the 73rd member of the Liberal Democrats, which is rather fun,” Mr. Darling said to News.
She acts as a link between members of different groups; everyone has been incredibly kind and accommodating to her.
It’s encouraging that one Labour member approached Jennie and asked to have a selfie with her.
“Even the heavily armed police officers in parliament get teary-eyed when they see Jennie pass by.
