A momentous day for Pakistan was announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday, following the National Assembly’s adoption of the 26th Constitutional Amendment.
“Today, the decision has been made that the legislature is supreme,” he declared, following 225 members—including independent and coalition partners—who supported the bill.
The chief justice of Pakistan will henceforth be chosen by a parliamentary committee and hold office for a fixed period of three years, as per the judicial reforms approved at a late-night session of parliament. In addition, a new constitutional bench will be appointed.
With the vital backing of a few independent candidates, the administration secured 225 out of the necessary 224 votes. PTI declined to support the package and abstained from the vote process.
