According to Information Minister Mohammed Idris, the president of Nigeria has ordered the release of all children arrested during demonstrations against the August price hike and the revocation of any treason charges against them.
Idris stated on Monday that the president has ordered the immediate release of these juveniles.
Following their involvement in fatal rallies over economic hardship in August, at least 76 people—including 30 minors—were charged with treason and inciting a military coup.
After the youngsters were paraded in court last Friday, their arraignment provoked popular indignation and condemnation of the authorities.
In recent months, there have been multiple protests calling for better jobs and opportunities for young people as a result of frustration with the cost of living crisis.
