LAHORE: A plan to greatly raise legislators’ salaries from Rs 76,000 to Rs 400,000 was unanimously passed by the Punjab Assembly.
During Monday’s assembly session, which was chaired by Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan, the Punjab Revision of Salaries of Public Representatives 2024 bill was approved.
Ahmad Khan Bachar, the leader of the opposition, objected to the bill, but the speaker referred to it as a constitutional and righteous step, citing the 1972 Parliamentary Act.
“The perks, including salaries and allowances of the speaker, deputy speaker, MPAs, parliamentary secretaries, advisors, special assistants, and ministers, are governed by their respective laws, and every time a revision in their perks is needed, relevant laws are required to be amended by the Assembly,” the legislation reads.
