The topic of transgender athletes participating in women’s and girls’ sports heated up in 2023 when Lia Thomas won the NCAA Championship in women’s swimming. Whether it was appropriate to let transgender female athletes compete against athletes who identify as their own gender was a hot topic of discussion on the internet and elsewhere. The conversation was passionate whether it was in high school, college, or the professionals. In order to prohibit schools and universities from forbidding transgender athletes, the Biden administration released new Title IX regulations in April that broadened the definition of sexual discrimination to include gender identity. No school or college that gets federal funds would be permitted to have a “one-size-fits-all” policy that outright prohibits transgender students under the department’s proposed regulation.
