The elimination of the US Department of Education was one of the main pledges made by President-elect Donald Trump during his presidential campaign.
Founded in 1979, the government organization manages student loan administration, public school funding, and low-income student assistance programs.
“Indoctrinating young people with inappropriate racial, sexual, and political material” is what Trump has accused the agency of doing.
However, it would be difficult for the incoming Republican president to get congressional approval to abolish the department.
Trump would likely require a supermajority, or 60 senators out of 100, in addition to congressional approval.
Republicans would need a few Democrats to vote even if they hold a majority in the Senate because the upper house does not have 60 members.
