Teachers at Uphall Primary School in Ilford are instructed not to yell at misbehaving students.
Head instructor Dr. Kulvarn Atwal adds, “The only reason I’d expect someone to shout at a child is if they’re running into a road and a car is coming.”
“If someone makes a mistake, if someone does something wrong, then that is a learning opportunity,” he states. “Every child learns differently, and behavior is learned in the same way as math or English. Some people struggle greatly to control their behavior.”
He claims that rather than giving the child a detention, a staff person or teacher will sit down with them and discuss what went wrong, why it happened, the feelings that led up to it, and what they could have done differently.
The child, according to him, must apologize and pledge to behave better going forward.
