In response to a petition opposing tree cutting during the building of the Red Bus BRT system, the Sindh High Court on Wednesday placed a prohibition on cutting down trees during any construction project throughout the province.
Touted as Pakistan’s first biogas-powered project, the Karachi BRT Red Line is scheduled for completion in 2026. “Since biogas is environmentally friendly, it will power its vehicles,” stated Sindh Transport Minister Sharjeel Memon.
However, the removal of trees to build the project’s route has alarmed a number of environmental specialists. For the ironically titled “Green Line,” the city’s first BRT project, the provincial government also felled trees.
The project consists of multiple parts, such as building two distinct corridors from Mausmiyat to Malir Halt Depot.
