CAPE TOWN: In support of boycott requests for Afghanistan in the Champions Trophy in Pakistan, South Africa’s Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie said he agreed with British lawmakers who have urged England to avoid playing them next month.
The Taliban government’s crackdown on women’s rights since regaining power in August 2021 has put pressure on South Africa and England, who are in the same group as Afghanistan in the One Day International competition, to boycott the matches.
On February 21, South Africa will play Afghanistan in Karachi to begin their Champions Trophy campaign, but McKenzie encouraged his nation’s cricket governing body not to honor the match.
