The first openly transgender actor nominated for Best Actress is Karla Sofia Gascon.
Alongside well-known actresses like Cynthia Erivo for Wicked, Mikey Madison for Anora, Demi Moore for The Substance, and Fernanda Torres for I’m Still Here, the actress received nominations.
The Netflix movie also received other nominations, including Best International Feature, Best Supporting Actress Zoe Saldana, Best Picture, and Best Director Jacques Audiard.
“You have an action movie that’s not an action movie, a drama that’s not a drama, a comedy that’s not a comedy,” Gascon, who made her directorial debut in Emilia Perez, said in 2024 when discussing the picture with Tudum.
