With over 3,000 members, the community reported that 85% of voters supported opposing the India-owned company’s proposals to eliminate up to 2,800 jobs, the most of which would be at Port Talbot, South Wales, the nation’s largest steelworks.
In an effort to save expenses and pollution, Tata announced last month that it will move forward with closing the plant’s blast furnaces and substituting them with electric arc furnaces.
By doing this, the business turned down a different proposal from the community and unions, which said it would increase output and safeguard jobs throughout the supply chain.
They contended that Tata’s plans would throw thousands of jobs onto the scrap heap needlessly and deprive the UK economy of its last “virgin” steelmaking facility.
