Charges of white-collar crime are the subject of Donald Trump’s first criminal trial, the first of a former US president, but it also has some of the most striking elements of all four of the criminal cases against him.
The main point of contention is the $130,000 (£104,000) in hush money that Mr. Trump’s lawyer paid to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. Daniels claims that in 2006, she had an affair with Trump.
However, that payment was lawful in the first place. Rather, the former president is accused of fabricating corporate records to conceal the payment, which was made shortly before the 2016 election, in order to avoid an embarrassing situation. This is the basis of the high-profile case that is bringing 34 felony accusations.
