WASHINGTON: The head of the taxpayer-funded center for conflict resolution was removed from office Monday as cost-cutters loyal to President Donald Trump and his billionaire pal Elon Musk took over the US Institute of Peace.
One of Trump’s most spectacular confrontations as he breaks down conventions in his quest to simplify Washington and carry out his “America First” agenda was the institution-appropriate nonviolent display of dissent.
President Ronald Reagan established the US Institute of Peace in 1984 with the goal of assisting the US in preventing and resolving international crises. Last month, Trump issued an order calling for the institute to be “eliminated to the maximum extent consistent with applicable law.”
According to the institute, Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency was being followed.
