UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency) is “absolutely essential” to provide such aid to Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, where Israel controls access, Jean-Pierre Lacroix told News’ The World With Yalda Hakim.
He said that the people of Gaza are in a “disastrous situation” more than a year into the conflict, which was started by Hamas’s massacre in southern Israel on October 7 of last year.
Citing the alleged involvement of certain local employees in the attack, the Israeli parliament voted on Monday to suspend the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.
Amid what it described as severe limitations on humanitarian shipments, the UN World Food Programme has urged for quick action to prevent starvation in Gaza and warned that the situation there could soon worsen.
The UN undersecretary-general for peace operations, Mr. Lacroix, stated that “continuous pressure” is necessary to prevent the Israeli legislation from being “operationalized” and that there has been a “very strong and very united expression of very serious concern” up to this point regarding the situation of the people of Gaza.
