Thousands of children and educators are relieved that the Supreme Court of India on Tuesday overturned a ruling that had prohibited Islamic schools in the most populous state of the nation, Uttar Pradesh.
In March of this year, the Allahabad High Court rendered a verdict that prompted the decision.
The court declared that a 2004 statute that governed madrasas violated the secularism principle of the constitution and ordered that all of its students be transferred to regular institutions.
However, 2.7 million kids and 10,000 teachers were given comfort when the Supreme Court overturned the March order and permitted the 25,000 Muslim schools to continue operating in the northern state.
