On Tuesday afternoon, one Bitcoin purchased $69,202 (£54,404) for the first time ever, breaking the previous record, which was little less than $69,000 (£54,242) set in November 2021.
It coincides, like the last peak, with the impending ‘halving’ event, which will see a 50% reduction in Bitcoin output.
An additional recent catalyst for the digital asset was the introduction of exchange-traded funds (ETFs), a new offering that lets investors watch the performance of Bitcoin without actually owning any of the cryptocurrency.
The value of Bitcoin decreased somewhat during the afternoon, reaching $66,447.16 (£52,240) per unit.
The 19th of April marks the next halving. The daily production of new Bitcoins will be reduced to 450 from approximately 900.
