Gwen Walz stated in an interview with Glamour that they used intrauterine insemination (IUI) procedures in order to conceive their daughter, Hope.
On the campaign trail, Mr. Walz has frequently discussed the couple’s personal experience of infertility struggles while cautioning that Republicans seek to limit women’s access to IVF and other reproductive rights.
He discussed healthcare and the choices he thinks every individual has during his first rally with presidential candidate Kamala Harris, which introduced him to many voters nationwide.
He continued, “This gets personal for me and my family, and that includes IVF.”
Ms. Walz provided additional information regarding their journey to parenthood with Glamour, stating that a neighbor who was a nurse gave “the shots I needed as part of the IUI process.”
“Our experience with fertility was deeply personal and challenging,” she remarked. “Like so many others who have gone through these difficulties, we mostly kept it to ourselves at the time.”
She mentioned that their family made the decision to share the story after witnessing the attacks on reproductive rights and fertility, especially in Alabama, where the state’s Supreme Court declared that frozen embryos were legally regarded as infants, forcing IVF clinics to close all throughout the state.
