Central China has discovered a high-grade gold ore mine worth 600 billion yuan, or US $83 billion, that contains about 1,000 metric tons (1,100 US tons) of yellow metal, according to Chinese state media.
The Geological Bureau of Hunan Province confirmed the reservoir’s establishment after finding 40 gold veins in the northeastern Pingjiang county that were within 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) of the surface, according to Science Alert.
Beyond the more than 900 metric tons of gold reserves found in the South Deep mine in South Africa, the discovery may be the biggest and most profitable gold reservoir ever discovered.
