George Galloway, the head of Britain’s left-wing Workers’ Party, has been elected as the next member for the English town of Rochdale with 12,335 votes, defeating independent candidate David Tully, who received 6,638 votes, according to Reuters.
Galloway won over many of Rochdale’s Muslim population by criticizing both Labour and Britain’s ruling Conservatives for supporting Israel’s invasion of Gaza, making a foreign conflict the main topic – an uncommon move in a by-election when local concerns typically take precedence.
In his winning address, Galloway stated, “Keir Starmer, this is for Gaza. You have paid, and will pay, a high price for the role that you have played in permitting, encouraging, and covering for the disaster that is currently going on in occupied.
