Prosecutors in South Africa declared on Monday that they would bring charges of corruption against the speaker of the house of representatives. They claim that throughout the course of her three-year term as defense minister, she collected payments totaling $135,000 (£107,000) and a wig.
The current Speaker of the National Assembly, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, has not yet been charged or turned over to the police in relation to the Colonel Dlamini-Zuma case.
Prosecutors presented their evidence during a trial hearing, which Mapisa-Nqakula contested on the basis that the law enforcement personnel had not informed her of the accusations in a timely manner or had not followed the proper protocols.
In addition, she was charged with accepting a $105k bribe that was not accepted. In January 2019, Mapisa-Nqakula received a wig and $15,000 within the nation’s main international airport, as per a specific case mentioned in the papers.
The names of the individuals involved in the bribing were only disclosed in relation to them; no other information was provided. Mapisa-Nqakula has stated that she will assist in furthering the probe while refuting the accusations.
