The prime minister has stated time and time again that his “working assumption” is that the election will happen in the second part of this year, even though the legislation stipulates that the latest he can call it is January 2025.
Even though a lot of pundits had anticipated a vote in the fall, Trevor Phillips of News told Mr. Sunak that it might actually happen as early as July.
“Well, look, when it comes to a general election, I’ve been very clear about that multiple times,” the prime minister was quoted as saying.
And once more, I will not add to what I have already stated; I have made it very plain.
Phillips pressed Mr. Sunak five times throughout the interview to say whether he would rule out a general election in July, but the leader of the Conservative Party would not say whether it could happen at that time.
