Unless the Supreme Court takes action to prohibit it, TikTok intends to close its service for US users starting on Sunday, when a federal ban on the social media app may take effect, according to people familiar with the situation.
The closure would have a different effect than what the legislation required. Only new TikTok downloads from the Apple or Google app stores would be prohibited by the rule; current users would be permitted to keep using the app for a while.
The sources asked to remain anonymous because the topic is private, but according to TikTok’s plan, users who try to access the app will receive a pop-up notice pointing them to a webpage with details about the ban.
