On Monday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is anticipated to make a final decision over a potential extension, given that the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) IRIS system is now experiencing a severe technical difficulty.
Many taxpayers are finding it impossible to meet the current deadline of September 30, 2024, as a result of recurring and pervasive issues with the IRIS online tax filing platform.
These are not small bugs; they are serious issues that have been getting worse for several days. Tax bar groups all around the country have filed urgent complaints, describing a system that is essentially inoperable due to overload. Faraz Fazal Sheikh, the president of the Rawalpindi Islamabad Tax Bar Association, emphasized that whereas simpler returns—such as those filed by salaried individuals—are being completed, returns with a significant amount of data are often failing to upload.
