In connection with a corruption case involving the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht, Alejandro Toledo, the former president of Peru from 2001 to 2006, was given a 20-year and 6-month prison sentence.
After lengthy legal disputes regarding Toledo’s extradition from the United States, the National Superior Court of Specialized Criminal Justice in Lima made the announcement on October 21, 2024.
Toledo was charged with taking bribes of $35 million from Odebrecht in order to help build a highway in Peru.
The Odebrecht affair, in which the corporation acknowledged extensive bribes to obtain government contracts, has been a major corruption concern throughout Latin America.
