Journalists’ organizations declared Thursday that they will observe a “Black Day” in opposition to the “black law,” one day after President Asif Ali Zardari signed into law the contentious revisions to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca) 2016.
Amid protests by the opposition and journalistic community over the controversial modifications, President Zardari signed the controversial Peca (Amendment) Bill 2025 into law on Wednesday.
Earlier, in spite of resistance and media demonstrations, the contentious bill easily passed both the Senate and the National Assembly.
The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) announced in a statement that black flags would be raised in the union’s headquarters and at press clubs around the county.
In a joint statement, PFUJ President Afzal Butt and Secretary Arshad Ansari announced that the journalists would participate in rallies.
