Tony Bennett will retire on Friday, the school said Thursday.
Prior to the 2009–10 season, the 55-year-old Bennett joined the Cavaliers, and in his first two seasons, he was.500. However, he made Virginia a dominant force in collegiate basketball.
The Cavaliers have advanced to the March Madness tournament in nine of the past ten tournaments, despite missing it in three of his first four seasons.
Bennett came under fire after UMBC crushed his team in the opening round of the 2018 tournament, making them the first No. 1 seed to ever fall to a 16th seed.
But the next year, Bennett and his Cavaliers returned with a bang, dominating the table to win it all.
