Imran Khan’s legal problems only got worse on Wednesday as an accountability court in the Toshakhana reference sentenced the former prime minister and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to 14 years in prison with harsh punishment.
Judge Muhammad Bashir of the accountability court delivered the decision, disqualifying the former prime minister for ten years and fining the couple Rs 1.57 billion, or Rs 787 million apiece.
The court had previously recorded Bushra Bibi’s statement under Section 342 during the prior hearing, which was also held at the Adiala jail.
Khan told the court that his wife was being humiliated by being forced into a lawsuit that she had nothing to do with.
Judge Bashir questioned Khan on whether he had taped his statement at the beginning of today’s hearing. In response, the former prime minister stated he would provide his testimony as soon as his attorneys arrived.
The PTI founder declared, “I have been duped, as I was only called to mark my attendance for the hearing.”
Bushra Bibi showed up at the Adiala jail and turned herself in to the police after the verdict was rendered; she was not in court when the sentence was announced.
Regarding the graff jewelry set, which included necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and a ring valued at Rs1.57 billion, NAB has filed a reference against the pair.
Bushra and Khan had only paid Rs. 9 million, and they had used a private company to set the jewellery’s price.
