Trump envisioned “a real trade deal” that would spare the UK from the tariffs he has been threatening to impose on some of the US’s other trading partners, while the prime minister was in the White House.
The trip was regarded as a turning point in Sir Keir’s premiership as he attempted to sway Trump’s choices on issues including trade and Ukraine.
Presenting Trump with a letter from King Charles inviting him to a “unprecedented” second state visit to the UK was how Sir Keir began his White House visit.
Trump called the King “a wonderful man” and said it would be a “great honor” as he accepted the letter in front of cameras in the Oval Office.
