After being denied access to food and water for months, illegal miners at an abandoned gold mine in South Africa have turned to cannibalism as a means of survival.
A startling standoff has resulted from authorities’ harsh eviction tactics of the miners from the former Buffelsfontein Gold Mine.
As survivors described their dire circumstances, they disclosed that some people, in a state of extreme desperation, severed sections of their own bodies in order to survive.
According to a rescuer, as their food sources ran out, they lived by eating cockroaches.
