Because of the current spread of the Marburg virus, the US government has issued a travel alert asking its people to reevaluate their intentions to visit Rwanda.
On a 4-point scale, the advisory has been upgraded from Category 2 to Category 3, meaning that it is strongly advised not to go.
Severe hemorrhagic fever is a known side effect of the Marburg virus, which belongs to the filovirus family that also contains the Ebola virus.
Twelve people have died since the first instances were recorded on September 28. Healthcare personnel make up the majority of the victims.
This virus can cause severe fever, hemorrhage that damages numerous organs, and a death rate of up to 88%.
