A two-month temporary exemption from sales tax on a specific list of items during the holiday season was announced by the prime minister on Thursday.
Among other items on the list are toys, restaurant meals, Christmas trees, booze, and desserts.
Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the Conservative Party, who will run against the Liberal prime minister in the next election, referred to Trudeau’s tax proposals as “a trick” meant to divert attention away from the government’s responsibility for cost increases.
At a news conference, Trudeau declared, “Canadians are going to get a real break on everything they do for two months.”
“We can increase people’s incomes, but our government cannot set prices at the register. People will receive the necessary alleviation as a result. We are available to assist those who are being squeezed.
