In the midst of Donald Trump’s major deportation campaign, the US Justice Department has sued Chicago, alleging that local officials are obstructing federal immigration enforcement efforts.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker are named in the complaint, which also attempts to stop local regulations that “interfere with and discriminate against” federal immigration policy.
A number of states, including Illinois, the home state of Chicago, have pledged to oppose attempts to detain and deport undocumented migrants, challenging the policies of the Trump administration.
Pam Bondi, the newly appointed attorney general, also pledged this week to reduce federal assistance for so-called “sanctuary cities.”
