President Donald Trump has requested permission from the US Supreme Court to dismiss the head of an independent ethics agency that defends government employees who come forward with information about wrongdoing.
To find out if he may terminate Hampton Dellinger, the head of the US Office of Special Counsel, he has filed an urgent appeal with the nation’s highest court.
It is believed to be the first case to make it all the way to the highest court with Trump’s flurry of executive acts.
In addition, Trump has dismissed thousands of workers from the US government and removed over a dozen inspectors general from federal agencies.
After being fired by email this month, Mr. Dellinger, who was appointed by President Joe Biden, filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration.
