In defiance of Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership, twenty council members have resigned from Labour.
The council members, who are from Nottinghamshire’s Broxtowe Borough Council, said the party had “abandoned traditional Labour values” and criticized policies including reducing some retirees’ winter fuel allowance.
Among those leaving Labour is Milan Radulovic, the leader of the council and a 42-year party member.
The choice of certain council members to serve as independents eighteen months after their election was deemed “incredibly disappointing” by a local Labour representative.
The council members said that they would form a new independent party with the intention of operating the borough council as a minority government in the near future, however they could require assistance from current independents to maintain power.
