In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Dera Ismail Khan and Lakki Marwat districts, two more poliovirus cases have been verified. This increases the number of cases of the crippling illness that have been documented nationwide to 45 so far this year.
Two further instances of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) have been confirmed by the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication in Islamabad. A two-year-old boy in D.I. Khan and a 34-month-old daughter in Lakki Marwat are the impacted persons. According to a laboratory official, the samples from these kids are presently undergoing genetic sequencing.
These incidents occur during a national immunization campaign that aims to vaccinate more than 45 million children under five. In the past, each district had reported one poliovirus case.
