Both are former Soviet republics that have seen the effects of Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The Georgian administration has been charged with “democratic backsliding” and turning away from Europe, while Maia Sandu, the pro-EU president of Moldova, is the front-runner and negotiations to join the EU have started.
The twin vote in Moldova
In addition to the presidential election, Moldovans will vote on Sunday in a referendum to codify the country’s road to EU membership in the constitution.
With a yes vote, Moldova would further solidify its position as a pro-Western, EU-facing country. Additionally, it would need Moldova to go on a protracted democratic journey.
According to a poll conducted last month, over sixty-three percent of people would support the Yes campaign. Many in the pro-European camp, however, have condemned what they claim are Russian attempts to sway the vote and disseminate false information.
