A wall of ice inside a cave on the Breioamerkurjokull glacier in the south of the country broke as a party of twenty-five tourists were on an organized tour of the glacier.
The emergency services stated that at this time, they are unable to verify the travelers’ nationality.
Two hundred individuals are involved in a complicated operation that aims to save the two visitors who are believed to be trapped beneath the ice.
“A group of 25 foreign tourists of various nationalities were exploring the ice cave when the accident occurred,” a statement from the south Icelandic police read.
Numerous responders and rescuers have contributed to the effort.
It’s getting dark, and the search circumstances are challenging. Due to the scene’s hazards, carrying out the search at night is not deemed defendable. As a result, the search has been put on hold and will start again in the morning.
