Ukraine has battled pervasive corruption since its declaration of independence in 1991, and both government officials and independent campaigners believe that struggle is critical to winning the existential war with Russia.
They have achieved some success. Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index now ranks Ukraine 104th out of 180 nations, the highest it has been since 2006.
“Most Ukrainian anti-corruption institutions are showing pretty good results,” Andriy Borovyk, executive director of Transparency International Ukraine, told the news.
According to him, one such result is the May 2023 arrest of Vsevolod Knyazev, the then-Supreme Court chief, on bribery accusations.
“This can be a precaution because if you see someone jailed, you will think twice about doing anything.
